Lessons from England:
Implementing a new national
approach to mathematics
teaching

Foreword by Matt Davis, Global Managing Director at Etio:

Etio has held the contract to manage England’s National Centre
for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM) since 2005,
working in partnership with the maths charity MEI. Since 2015,
the NCETM has been responsible for implementing a Mastery
approach to teaching mathematics in all of England’s schools.
At the time of writing, 70% of primary schools and 57% of secondary
schools had been trained to adopt this methodology.

As a result “there has been a resounding, positive shift in mathematics
education” in recent years in England. In international comparison tests
15-year-olds from England now perform above the OECD average in
mathematics , suffering less impact from COVID than many of their peers.
Primary aged pupils do even better, with a score significantly above the
TIMSS average.

This briefing provides insights to guide policymakers considering similar
initiatives for their jurisdiction.
