Enhancing university student experience in the GCC

From the International Student barometer (ISB) - the world's largest student experience survey of enrolled students.

The International Student Barometer (ISB) measures, tracks and benchmarks international student opinion across the entire student journey, providing your institution with data and insights to develop a world-class student experience, and grow your international student numbers.

The ISB is used by Higher Education institutions, membership bodies, networks and national governments around the world to provide the global benchmark for the international student experience, and improve their global competitiveness through quality.

We are now inviting institutions from across the GCC to participate in the 2026 survey.

  • Understand your performance in a competitive context - compare your institution’s international (and domestic) student experience with regional, national, global and bespoke comparator group benchmarks.
  • Engage in improvement activities that will contribute to your university rankings.
  • Enhance your international marketing and recruitment strategies.
  • Ensure your institution's employability strategies are providing your students with the skills they need.
  • Create institution-wide understanding of what is needed to deliver a world-class student experience.
  • Understand evolving international student perceptions, expectations, motivations, decision-making, and the factors impacting recommendation.
  • Quantify the impact of student experience improvement initiatives.
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement – understand your strengths and areas for improvement, and set meaningful KPIs.

Implementing effective International Education Strategy: Drawing lessons from global best practices

Examples of national strategies utilising the ISB to help diversify international student populations and maximize their contribution to the region: Estonia, Germany, Finland and New Zealand. "The Strategy for the Internationalisation of Estonian Higher Education has been considered by experts consulted informally for this report as “a classroom example of how things should be done and was indeed very effective”. Improving the international student experience through data-informed decision-making at The University of Texas at Austin.

“The ISB offers a holistic view of the international student experience, from application to graduation. It enables UT Austin to make data-driven decisions to sustain positive aspects and improve areas that need attention. Being intentional and soliciting feedback is critical in our efforts to support international students as an integral part of the Longhorn community.”

The benefits of meaningful analysis of the student experience at Colorado State University

“Using the ISB to focus on student satisfaction, student success and the student experience can have both near-term and long-term positive impacts on international student enrollment and retention. And I think that's especially vital in the United States. So, I would encourage all universities to be engaging in this type of reflection, and ideally through the ISB, because I think only by really understanding where your students, are in terms of their relationship with your university, and compared with other universities, can you really get an authentic and honest answer of how satisfied your students are. It moves us away from the anecdotal to having a clear, accurate understanding, so we can make better strategic decisions.”

Planning effective recruitment strategies in existing and new markets.

"As a group of Irish education institutions, we are working hard to promote Ireland as an education destination as well as promoting specific programmes, supports and facilities in our individual institutions. Knowing that Ireland generally, and UL in particular, exceeds the global benchmark in many aspects of student support and employability is very helpful in this work.”

Shaping the international student experience against a backdrop of growing numbers.

“It would be very simple to assume we know our students, but the landscape evolves and so do our student populations- their priorities and motivations change, their tastes change, their behaviours change. It’s dangerous for universities to assume otherwise, which is why we keep asking questions, keep measuring, and keep responding to the insights.”

Transforming the international student experience through data-driven insights and a whole-university commitment to success.

"We think having a survey among international students is so important. It’s something we just now do as an organisation. The ISB allows us to confirm what we’re doing well and identify areas where we can do better. It’s a critical tool for making data-informed decisions that benefit our students and staff alike."
